Lillie Bernie is the rising London-based model and painter that’s shaking up the art world, demonstrating you don’t need a fine art degree to create work that connects people to you.
As a full-time model, she uses her unusual experience of being both a muse and artist as inspiration for her work which has seen her exhibit in her home city and as far as Miami and Dubai. Across her Instagram you’ll find a beautiful curation of her inspirations, her paintings that explore her interpretation of human emotion and Bernie’s journey a model.
Though she studied broadcast journalism at university her artistic flair was always apparent. She abandoned art after A-Level but her parents persuaded her to pick up the paint brushes again, after being so moved by one of her paintings they hung it pride of place in their living room. After plenty of persistence from her family, she headed to a craft store to pick up suppliers and from that moment, her life was to take a different path,
Entirely self-taught, Bernie reached out to people that inspire her, developing her skillset and exhibiting her work across social meeting - picking up many fans along the way. It wasn’t long though before she was exhibiting in physical spaces, being invited to exhibit at the prestigious Art Basel in Miami and then alongside sculptor Schoony in Dubai for a collaborative show. Since she’s debuted in London at the capital’s cool hang-out spot Lights of Soho and collaborated with brands such as Photoage and OCCIPARK.
Bernie uses her art as a medium of expression, focusing on issues such as ‘human completeness’. She takes a strong interest in one’s ability to take charge of their emotions and disengage from the often negative environments that can lead to a confused existence.
She is particularly interested in life’s perplexities and reflects on the struggle for fulfillment which is reflected by the circle being so present in her work. Dialectical dispositions, selfishness and selflessness, fear and bravery, and apathy and concern are clear themes seen across Bernie’s work as she interprets the pursuit for the dispositions that make one whole.
Bernie uses her growing platform to connect and unite other young creatives that, like her, did not follow the traditional path into fine art and hopes her experiences will be able to help others who have had to navigate the model and art worlds.
